About American Legion

The American Legion is a non-profit veteran’s service organization that serves 2.8 million veterans and veterans families nationwide. "Still Serving America" is the motto of The American Legion. Veterans who continue their service to America by still serving their communities. Veterans whose involvement in the community creates and supports the feeling of camaraderie which makes The American Legion the nation's largest and most respected organization of wartime veterans.

The Department of Oklahoma has a membership base of 27,754 for 2008-2009. We have 279 Posts across the state to serve veterans where they live. Our organization provides many services for veterans and sponsors children and youth activities all across the State. The following are just a few of the ways our members are "Still Serving America."

  • American Legion Memorial Poppy Association - The Oklahoma Legion has a Memorial Poppy Warehouse which utilizes Oklahoma veterans and veteran's families to manufacture Poppy Flowers and Poppy wreaths that are used on the gravesites of Veterans throughout the state of Oklahoma. Our 279 posts, auxiliaries and individuals purchase the wreaths and decorate the graves for Veterans Day, Holidays and Memorial Day with these wreaths each year.
  • Veterans Rehabilitation Services - service officers at each post in the state of Oklahoma and at the VA Hospital in Oklahoma City and Muskogee-assisting veterans with VA claims and other needs of the family.
  • The Legion's Family Support Network has helped numerous of family members of reserve military personnel called to active duty with every day needs from simple household repairs to financial assistance.
  • TFA - Temporary Financial Assistance for veterans with minor children in the home.
  • Programs that we sponsor - Legion Baseball, Boys State Program, High School Oratorical Contest, Scouting sponsorship, Jr. Shooting Program, Flag Education and Scholarship Education.
